Why visit Bahamas

The Bahamas is an island nation of around 700 islands and cays scattered across some of the clearest, most vivid water in the Atlantic. Nassau and Paradise Island bring resorts, restaurants and lively nightlife, while the Out Islands offer pink sand, quiet fishing villages and sandbars made for wading. It works for family beach holidays, romantic escapes and island hopping alike.

Highlights of Bahamas

  • Paradise Island: Home to large resorts, a waterpark, marinas and long beaches, easily reached from Nassau by bridge and ideal for families.
  • The Exumas: A chain of cays with turquoise shallows, secluded beaches and the famous swimming pigs of Big Major Cay.
  • Harbour Island: Known for its pink sand beach, pastel colonial cottages and relaxed golf cart travel, reached by a short ferry from Eleuthera.
  • Nassau Old Town: Pastel government buildings, forts and the Straw Market give a taste of Bahamian history, crafts and Junkanoo culture.
  • Snorkelling and diving: Coral reefs, blue holes and wrecks offer excellent underwater visibility, with trips suited to beginners and experienced divers.

Best time to visit Bahamas

The dry season from mid December to April brings warm, sunny days and comfortable evenings, and is the most popular time to visit. May and early summer are hotter and often better value, with calm seas for snorkelling. Hurricane season officially runs from June to November, with the greatest risk in late summer and early autumn.

Getting there from the UK

Direct flights from London to Nassau take about 9 to 10 hours, with services from Heathrow. One stop options via the USA are also common. Nassau's Lynden Pindling International Airport is the main gateway, with short domestic flights or ferries onward to other islands.

Good to know

The Bahamian dollar is pegged to the US dollar, and US dollars are accepted almost everywhere. English is spoken throughout. Sockets are Type A and B at 120 volts, so a plug adaptor is useful. Always check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for entry requirements before booking and travelling.
