Why visit Bali

Bali is an island where daily offerings, carved temples and ceremonies shape ordinary life. Travellers can mix surf beaches and clifftop sunsets in the south with the cooler, greener heart around Ubud, then add volcanoes, waterfalls and small islands offshore. It rewards both active explorers and those who simply want spa time, good food and warm hospitality.

Highlights of Bali

  • Ubud: The island's cultural centre, with art galleries, dance performances, yoga studios, cafes and the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary.
  • Tegallalang Rice Terraces: Layered green terraces north of Ubud, best visited early in the morning for softer light and fewer visitors.
  • Uluwatu Temple: A sea temple perched on a high cliff, famed for ocean views and evening Kecak fire dance performances.
  • Tanah Lot: A temple set on a rocky outcrop just offshore, popular at sunset when the tide and colours put on a show.
  • Nusa Penida: A short boat ride from the mainland, with dramatic cliffs, beaches and snorkelling spots for a memorable day trip.

Best time to visit Bali

The dry season from April to October brings sunshine, lower humidity and the best conditions for sightseeing and beaches, with July and August the busiest months. The wetter season from November to March has heavier showers, usually short, and lush scenery with fewer crowds. Surf conditions vary by coast and season.

Getting there from the UK

There are no direct flights from London, so expect one stop, usually via the Gulf, Singapore or another Asian hub. Total journey time is around 16 to 20 hours. You will arrive at Ngurah Rai International Airport near Denpasar, close to the southern resorts.

Good to know

The currency is the Indonesian rupiah, and cash is useful in smaller places. Indonesian is the national language, and English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Sockets are Type C and F at 230 volts. Cover shoulders and knees at temples. Check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for entry requirements.
