Bangladesh Holidays
Overview
Bangladesh is a country of rivers, lively cities, and wide delta landscapes. It suits travellers who want markets, river journeys, and time around Dhaka and the Sundarbans.
Why visit Bangladesh
Bangladesh rewards travellers who like to go beyond the usual routes. Rivers thread through the green delta, boats carry people and goods between towns, and cities such as Dhaka hum with rickshaws, street food and textile markets. Beyond the capital you will find tea hills, ancient mosques, mangrove wildlife and one of the longest natural beaches in the world.
Highlights of Bangladesh
- Old Dhaka: A busy maze of lanes, markets and historic buildings, with Ahsan Manzil, the pink palace on the Buriganga River, a highlight.
- The Sundarbans: A vast mangrove forest and UNESCO World Heritage Site, explored by boat in search of birds, deer, crocodiles and the elusive Bengal tiger.
- Cox's Bazar: A famously long sandy beach on the Bay of Bengal, with seafood stalls, surf and relaxed seaside atmosphere.
- Srimangal: Rolling tea estates, rainforest walks and seven layer tea make this northeastern area a refreshing change from the cities.
- Bagerhat: A UNESCO listed historic mosque city, home to the Sixty Dome Mosque, which dates from the fifteenth century.
Best time to visit Bangladesh
The cooler, drier months from November to February are the most comfortable for travel, with clear skies and pleasant temperatures. March to May turns hot and humid, and the monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain and flooding in some areas. Plan river and wildlife trips for the winter months.
Getting there from the UK
Most journeys from London involve one stop, often via the Gulf, Istanbul or another hub, taking around 11 to 15 hours in total. Direct services have operated at times, so check current schedules. The main arrival airport is Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
Good to know
The currency is the Bangladeshi taka, and cash is widely used. Bengali is the main language, and some English is spoken in hotels and cities. Sockets vary, with several types in use at 220 volts, so bring a universal adaptor. Always check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for entry requirements and health guidance.
