Canada Holidays
Overview
Canada stretches from Atlantic harbours to Pacific mountains, with cities, lakes, and long scenic routes in between. It suits city breaks, rail journeys, and time in the national parks.
Why visit Canada
Canada offers grand scale and welcoming cities in equal measure. Visitors can ride a train through the Rockies, watch the water thunder over Niagara, stroll cobbled streets in Quebec City or look for wildlife in the national parks. It is a rewarding choice for road trips, rail journeys, family holidays and multi stop itineraries across several provinces.
Highlights of Canada
- Banff and Lake Louise: Mountain scenery, turquoise glacial lakes and hiking trails make this the heart of the Canadian Rockies.
- Niagara Falls: Boat trips and viewpoints bring you close to the roaring falls, within easy reach of Toronto and nearby wine country.
- Vancouver: A coastal city with mountains behind, Stanley Park, seafront cycling and fine dining, and a base for Whistler and Vancouver Island.
- Quebec City: A walled old town, French language and cuisine, and the grand Chateau Frontenac create a European feel in North America.
- Rocky Mountaineer: A scenic daytime rail journey between Vancouver and the Rockies, with panoramic windows and views of rivers and peaks.
Best time to visit Canada
Summer from June to August is warm and ideal for lakes, hiking and city festivals. September and October bring striking autumn colours, particularly in Ontario and Quebec. Winter from December to March suits skiing and snow sports in the Rockies and Whistler. Spring is quieter, and weather varies widely across such a large country.
Getting there from the UK
Direct flights from London take around 7 to 8 hours to Toronto and Montreal, and about 9 to 10 hours to Vancouver, Calgary and the west. Many itineraries combine two cities with internal flights, trains or a hire car. Toronto Pearson and Vancouver are major gateways.
Good to know
The currency is the Canadian dollar. English and French are both official languages. Sockets are Type A and B at 120 volts, so a plug adaptor is needed. Tipping is customary in restaurants. Always check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for entry requirements before you book and travel.
