Why visit China

China combines thousands of years of history with futuristic cities and landscapes of real drama. Visitors can walk the Great Wall, wander the courtyards of the Forbidden City, see the Terracotta Army and watch Shanghai light up along the Bund. Food varies enormously by region, and a well planned itinerary links the highlights by fast train or domestic flight.

Highlights of China

  • The Great Wall: Sections such as Mutianyu and Badaling are within easy reach of Beijing, offering walkable stretches, watchtowers and wide mountain views.
  • Forbidden City: The vast former imperial palace in central Beijing, with halls, courtyards and gardens that reveal centuries of dynastic history.
  • Terracotta Army: Thousands of life sized warriors guard the tomb of the first emperor, an unforgettable day trip from the city of Xi'an.
  • The Bund, Shanghai: A riverside promenade facing the Pudong skyline, best seen at night when the towers and old colonial buildings are lit.
  • Guilin and the Li River: River cruises glide past limestone peaks and farmland, with cycling and countryside walks around Yangshuo.

Best time to visit China

Spring from April to May and autumn from September to October are generally the most comfortable, with mild temperatures and clearer skies in much of the country. Summer is hot and humid, with rain in the south and east. Winter is cold in the north but quieter. Avoid national holidays such as Golden Week, when crowds peak.

Getting there from the UK

Direct flights from London take around 10 to 11 hours to Beijing and Shanghai, with some services to other cities. One stop options are also available. Beijing Capital, Beijing Daxing and Shanghai Pudong are the main arrival airports for most itineraries.

Good to know

The currency is the renminbi, or yuan, and mobile payments are very common, so carry some cash as a backup. Mandarin is the main language, and English is limited outside major hotels. Sockets include Types A, C and I at 220 volts. Always check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for entry requirements.
