Iceland Holidays
Overview
Waterfalls, black sand and aurora hunting under expert guides.
Why visit Iceland
Iceland is a land of dramatic contrasts, where glaciers meet volcanoes, black sand beaches border roaring waterfalls and steaming geothermal pools sit in open lava fields. Many visitors base themselves around Reykjavik, then explore the Golden Circle and the south coast, while others drive the full Ring Road. Whether you chase the northern lights or the midnight sun, the scale of the scenery is unforgettable.
Highlights of Iceland
- The Golden Circle: Combine Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area and the mighty Gullfoss waterfall on one classic day trip from Reykjavik.
- South coast waterfalls: Visit Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, then continue to Reynisfjara's black sand beach and its towering basalt columns.
- Geothermal lagoons: Soak in warm, mineral-rich waters at the Blue Lagoon or one of the country's quieter natural hot spring baths.
- Northern lights: On clear winter nights, head away from city lights to look for the aurora, ideally with a local guide.
- Reykjavik: Explore colourful streets, harbourside museums and the striking Hallgrimskirkja church, then enjoy fresh seafood and cosy cafes.
Best time to visit Iceland
For the northern lights, visit from late September to March, when nights are long and dark, though days are short and roads can be icy. From June to August you enjoy near endless daylight, open highland roads and the best chance of puffin and whale sightings. Weather is changeable all year, so pack layers and waterproofs whenever you go.
Getting there from the UK
Direct flights from London to Keflavik International Airport take around three hours, with some services from other UK airports. Keflavik is about 45 minutes by road from Reykjavik, and transfers are straightforward. Sky Travel can arrange flights from UK airports and tailor a trip around your preferred season and pace.
Good to know
Iceland uses the Icelandic krona, and cards are accepted almost everywhere, even for small purchases. Icelandic is the national language, but English is very widely spoken. Plugs are the continental two-pin type. Weather and road conditions can change quickly, so check forecasts before driving. Check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for entry requirements before you travel.
