Why visit India
India rewards curious travellers with an astonishing variety of landscapes, cuisines and traditions. You might watch dawn light on the Taj Mahal, bargain in the pink streets of Jaipur, drift through the backwaters of Kerala or look for tigers in a national park. It is a country of colour, noise and warm hospitality, and a well planned itinerary lets you enjoy its highlights at a comfortable pace.
Highlights of India
- The Taj Mahal, Agra: See the white marble mausoleum glow at sunrise, then visit the red sandstone walls of nearby Agra Fort.
- Jaipur and Rajasthan: Explore forts, palaces and lively bazaars in the Pink City, with desert towns such as Jodhpur and Udaipur beyond.
- Kerala backwaters: Drift by houseboat through quiet palm-fringed canals, passing villages, rice paddies and fishing boats.
- Varanasi: Take a dawn boat trip on the Ganges to see rituals along the ancient ghats of one of the world's oldest cities.
- Wildlife safaris: Look for tigers, leopards and deer in reserves such as Ranthambore, which many travellers add to Rajasthan itineraries.
Best time to visit India
The cooler, drier months from October to March are the most comfortable for much of the country, especially the Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. April to June can be extremely hot in the north, while the monsoon from roughly June to September brings heavy rain, though it turns Kerala and the hills lush and green. Choose regions to match the season.
Getting there from the UK
Direct flights from London to Delhi or Mumbai take around nine hours, with services from other UK airports too. Delhi Indira Gandhi International is the usual arrival point for the Golden Triangle, while Mumbai, Chennai and Kochi are common gateways to the south. Sky Travel can arrange flights and tailor your route.
Good to know
The currency is the Indian rupee, and cash is useful outside major hotels and shops. Hindi and English are widely used, alongside many regional languages. Plugs are commonly the round-pin type, so bring an adaptor. Take care with food and water, and ask your doctor about health advice well ahead of travel. Check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for entry requirements before you go.
