Indonesia Holidays

Indonesia

Overview

Consisting of over 17,000 islands, Indonesia is a country in Southeast Asia that nests between the two oceans. Being a traditional trading hub for more than 14 centuries, the country is diverse in ethnicity and culture. Holidays to Indonesia are abundant in beautiful beaches, aquatic tourism, and stunning volcanic landscapes. Visit Bintan Island with its luxurious resorts and world-class golf courses, or head to see the beautiful temples in Bali, also known as the Island of Gods. Go island-hopping in Raja Ampat, an archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands in West Papua. This is a great spot for divers and snorkelers of all abilities. Here you can explore the coral islands and reef systems, which are a hotspot for marine species. Luxury Indonesia holidays often point to Bali, which is known for its tropical nature, pristine beaches, and overwater villas. Whether you go to Kuta, beautiful Nusa Dua, or visit Sanur beach, you will always be able to find sandy shores, shallow waters, and breathtaking temples. Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is another interesting place to visit. With a population of 10 million, Jakarta generates enough cultural buzz to attract both tourists and expats. See the wealth of Indonesian history and culture at Jakarta’s National Museum of Indonesia or explore a different side of the capital city by visiting the Thousand Islands. Another famous landmark of Indonesia is the 8th-century ancient temple of Borobudur. It is built in the shape of a traditional Buddhist mandala and has been declared a top World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Borobudur is believed to be one of the greatest Buddhist sites in the world. Our Indonesia holiday packages 2025-2026 ensure you get the most value with the best Indonesia flights and hotel rates on offer out there.

Why visit Indonesia

Indonesia stretches across thousands of islands, offering tropical beaches, volcanic peaks, rice terraces and ancient temples. Bali is the best known, with its spiritual traditions, beach clubs and lush uplands, but the country also includes Java's great monuments, Lombok's quieter shores and the Gili islands. Divers and snorkellers will find rich reefs, and food lovers will enjoy fragrant, spicy dishes at every turn.

Highlights of Indonesia

  • Ubud, Bali: Walk through rice terraces, visit temples and craft villages, and enjoy yoga, markets and relaxed cafes in Bali's cultural heart.
  • Bali's beaches: Choose between surf breaks, calm bays and sunset bars in areas such as Seminyak, Uluwatu and Nusa Dua.
  • Borobudur and Yogyakarta: Visit the vast ninth century Buddhist temple of Borobudur, then explore the royal palaces and lively streets of Yogyakarta.
  • Gili islands and Lombok: Enjoy snorkelling with turtles, car-free lanes and quiet beaches just off Lombok's coast.
  • Komodo National Park: Sail among dramatic islands to see Komodo dragons and snorkel in some of the country's richest waters.

Best time to visit Indonesia

The dry season from roughly April to October is the most popular time for Bali, Lombok and Java, with sunny days and lower humidity. July and August are the busiest months. The wetter season brings warm, humid weather with afternoon downpours, but also fewer visitors and greener scenery. Conditions vary across the archipelago, so check your chosen islands.

Getting there from the UK

There are no widely available direct flights from London to Bali, so most journeys involve one stop in the Gulf, Singapore or another hub, taking around 16 to 20 hours in total. Arrivals are usually into Ngurah Rai International Airport near Denpasar. Sky Travel can arrange flights from UK airports and tailor the stay.

Good to know

The currency is the Indonesian rupiah, and cash is useful outside resorts. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language, and English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Plugs are the continental two-pin type. Dress modestly when visiting temples, and ask about travel insurance for activities. Check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for entry requirements before you travel.
