Highlights of Malaysia
- Kuala Lumpur: Admire the Petronas Twin Towers, explore Chinatown and Little India, and sample the city's remarkable street food scene.
- George Town, Penang: Wander the UNESCO-listed old town, with street art, clan houses, colonial buildings and some of Malaysia's best hawker food.
- Langkawi: Relax on its beaches, take the cable car for views over the island and explore mangroves by boat.
- Borneo rainforest: Visit Sabah or Sarawak to see orangutans, hike in ancient rainforest and learn about local communities.
- Cameron Highlands: Cool off among hillside tea plantations and strawberry farms, with misty views and gentler temperatures.
Best time to visit Malaysia
Malaysia is warm all year, but the best weather depends on the coast. The west coast, including Penang and Langkawi, is generally driest from December to March. The east coast and its islands, such as the Perhentians, are best from March to October, and many resorts close during the monsoon months. Borneo has frequent rain, so pack a light waterproof.
Getting there from the UK
Direct flights from London to Kuala Lumpur International Airport take around 13 hours, and one-stop options are available from other UK airports. From Kuala Lumpur, short domestic flights reach Penang, Langkawi and Borneo. Sky Travel can arrange flights from UK airports and tailor a route to match your interests.
Good to know
The currency is the Malaysian ringgit, and cards are widely accepted in cities, with cash useful at markets and food stalls. Malay is the national language, though English is widely understood. Plugs are the UK three-pin type, so adaptors are usually unnecessary. Dress modestly at mosques and temples.
