Nepal

Overview

Nepal rises from the lowland plains to the high Himalaya. It is known for mountain viewpoints, temple towns, and walking routes above the Kathmandu valley.

Why visit Nepal

Nepal packs some of the world's highest mountains into a small country, but it is as much about people and culture as peaks. Kathmandu's temple squares and stupas sit beside Pokhara's lake and its mountain backdrop, while the Himalaya draws trekkers towards Everest and Annapurna. Chitwan's jungle adds wildlife, and everywhere there is a gentle, welcoming pace that stays with visitors long after they return.

Highlights of Nepal

  • Kathmandu Durbar Square: Explore old palaces, carved wooden temples and lively streets in the historic heart of the capital.
  • Boudhanath Stupa: One of the largest stupas in the world, circled daily by pilgrims, monks and prayer-wheel turners.
  • Pokhara and Phewa Lake: A laid-back lakeside town where boats drift beneath a skyline of Annapurna peaks on clear mornings.
  • Himalayan trekking: Routes range from gentle teahouse walks to the multi-day treks toward Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit.
  • Chitwan National Park: Look for one-horned rhinos, deer and birdlife on guided jungle walks and safari drives in the lowland plains.

Best time to visit Nepal

October and November offer the clearest skies and steady weather, making them the most popular months for trekking. March to May brings warmer days and rhododendrons in bloom, though haze can soften the views. The monsoon, from roughly June to September, brings heavy rain and leeches, so it is best avoided for high-altitude routes.

Getting there from the UK

There are no direct flights from London to Kathmandu, so most travellers connect once, often via the Gulf or India, with total journey times of around 12 to 15 hours. Arrival is at Tribhuvan International Airport, and domestic flights link on to Pokhara and mountain airstrips.

Good to know

The currency is the Nepalese rupee, and Nepali is the national language, with English commonly understood in tourist areas. Plugs vary, with types C, D and M used, so bring a universal adaptor. Altitude needs respect on treks, and good travel insurance is essential. Check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for entry requirements.
