Prague Holidays
Overview
Castles, bridges and old-town squares in one of Central Europe’s most elegant capitals.
Why visit Prague
Prague is a city of spires, bridges and cobbled squares, remarkably well preserved and wonderful on foot. The Old Town Square, Charles Bridge and Prague Castle make a classic first day, while Mala Strana and Vinohrady offer quieter streets and good cafes. Add a strong beer culture, classical music in historic halls and easy day trips, and it is a very satisfying city break.
Highlights of Prague
- Charles Bridge: Walk the Gothic stone bridge early in the morning for statues, river views and fewer people.
- Prague Castle: A vast hilltop complex including St Vitus Cathedral, the Golden Lane and sweeping views over red rooftops.
- Old Town Square: Admire the Astronomical Clock striking the hour among pastel facades and the Gothic Tyn Church.
- Jewish Quarter: Historic synagogues and an old cemetery tell the story of one of Europe's best preserved Jewish districts.
- Czech beer halls: Settle into a traditional pub for fresh pilsner and hearty classics such as goulash and dumplings.
Best time to visit Prague
Spring and early autumn, from April to June and September to October, are ideal, with mild weather and manageable crowds. Summer is warm and lively but busier. December is atmospheric, with Christmas markets and festive lights, though it is cold, so wrap up. Mornings are best for the main sights.
Getting there from the UK
Direct flights from London to Prague Vaclav Havel Airport take about 2 hours, with several UK airports served. The airport is roughly 30 to 40 minutes from the centre by taxi, and public transport links run to the city. Prague is also a good rail hub for onward travel.
Good to know
The currency is the Czech koruna, not the euro, and Czech is the language, though English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Plugs are the European two-pin type, so UK visitors need an adaptor. Cobbled streets call for comfortable shoes. Check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for entry requirements.
