Why visit Rwanda

Rwanda is a small, green and hilly country often called the land of a thousand hills, and it has become one of Africa's most rewarding destinations. Its headline experience is trekking to see mountain gorillas in the Virunga volcanoes, but there is also chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest and savannah safaris in Akagera. Kigali is clean, calm and thoughtful, with a moving memorial and a lively cafe scene.

Highlights of Rwanda

  • Gorilla trekking: Hike through Volcanoes National Park to spend a regulated hour with a habituated family of mountain gorillas.
  • Nyungwe Forest: Ancient montane rainforest with chimpanzee tracking, colobus monkeys and a canopy walkway above the trees.
  • Akagera National Park: Rwanda's savannah reserve, with game drives to see giraffes, zebras, elephants and hippos.
  • Kigali Genocide Memorial: A respectful and moving place that explains the country's history and its path to reconciliation.
  • Lake Kivu: A calm lakeside region with beaches, boat trips and coffee plantations, ideal for resting after trekking.

Best time to visit Rwanda

The main dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, are generally best for gorilla trekking, as trails are easier underfoot. The long rains from March to May bring lush scenery and fewer visitors but muddier going. Gorilla permits are limited, so early planning is strongly advised.

Getting there from the UK

There are no direct flights from London to Kigali, so most travellers connect once, often via Brussels, Istanbul or the Gulf, with total journeys of around 10 to 12 hours. Arrival is at Kigali International Airport, and road transfers lead to the national parks.

Good to know

The currency is the Rwandan franc. Kinyarwanda, English, French and Swahili are all used, and English is widely understood. Plugs are types C and J, so UK visitors need an adaptor. Single-use plastic bags are banned. Health precautions may apply, so seek medical advice. Check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for entry requirements.
