Why visit South Africa

South Africa is one of the most varied countries on earth. In a single trip you can track lions and elephants on safari, taste world-class wines in the Cape Winelands, hike beneath Table Mountain and drive the dramatic Garden Route coast. Warm hospitality, outstanding food and a layered, complex history make it as rewarding for culture lovers as it is for wildlife enthusiasts.

Highlights of South Africa

  • Kruger National Park: One of Africa's great game reserves, offering excellent chances to see the Big Five on guided drives from self-drive or private lodges.
  • Cape Town and Table Mountain: Ride the cable car for sweeping views, then explore the waterfront, colourful Bo-Kaap streets and the beaches of the Atlantic coast.
  • Cape Winelands: Taste acclaimed Cape wines around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, where Cape Dutch estates sit beneath rugged mountains.
  • Garden Route: Follow the scenic coast past lagoons, forests and beaches, with stops for whale watching, hiking and charming seaside towns.
  • Cape Peninsula: Drive Chapman's Peak to Cape Point, meeting penguins at Boulders Beach along the way on a memorable day out.

Best time to visit South Africa

The seasons are reversed from the UK. For safaris, the dry winter months of May to September are best, when animals gather at waterholes and the bush is thinner. Cape Town and the coast shine from November to March, with long, warm days. Winter in the Cape can be cool and wet, and the Kruger region is hottest and wettest in summer.

Getting there from the UK

Direct overnight flights from London to Johannesburg take around 11 hours, and to Cape Town about 12 hours. There is only a small time difference from the UK, so jet lag is minimal. Sky Travel can arrange flights from UK airports and combine a city stay with a safari.

Good to know

The currency is the South African rand. English is widely spoken, with eleven other official languages. Sockets are mostly Type M, with three round pins, so bring an adaptor. Cars drive on the left, as in the UK. Malaria risk varies by region, so seek health advice early. Check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for entry requirements.
