Why visit Southeast Asia
Southeast Asia is a region of contrasts, where ancient temples, floating markets and bustling night streets sit alongside tropical islands and misty highlands. Each country has its own flavour, from Thailand's beaches and Vietnam's cities to Cambodia's Angkor, Bali's rice terraces and Singapore's skyline. It suits multi-country journeys, easy island hopping and a warm welcome at every stop.
Highlights of Southeast Asia
- Angkor Wat, Cambodia: Explore the vast temple complex at sunrise, one of the most impressive ancient monuments anywhere in the world.
- Ha Long Bay, Vietnam: Cruise between thousands of limestone islands, with overnight boats offering calm water, seafood dinners and glowing sunsets.
- Thai islands: Choose from the Andaman coast or the Gulf for white sand, clear water, snorkelling and relaxed beach days.
- Bali, Indonesia: Combine rice terraces, temples and surf beaches with yoga retreats and some of the region's finest spa and dining.
- Singapore: Round off a trip with polished city sightseeing, famous food markets and gardens in one of Asia's most welcoming hubs.
Best time to visit Southeast Asia
The region spans several climates, so timing depends on where you go. Mainland countries such as Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia are generally best from November to April, during the drier, cooler months. Bali is driest from roughly May to September. The wet season brings short heavy downpours rather than constant rain, and often means quieter sights.
Getting there from the UK
Direct flights from London reach Bangkok and Singapore in about 11 to 13 hours, with many one-stop options via the Gulf to other regional hubs. Because journeys often cover several countries, flights between them are usually quick. Sky Travel can arrange flights from UK airports and plan the route.
Good to know
Currencies differ by country, including the Thai baht, Vietnamese dong, Indonesian rupiah and Singapore dollar. Plug types vary, so carry a universal adaptor. English is commonly understood in tourist areas. Dress modestly at temples. Health advice, including malaria precautions in some areas, is worth checking early.
