Why visit Switzerland
Switzerland is a small country of big variety, blending polished cities, clear lakes and a rich cultural mix of German, French and Italian influences. Think cobbled old towns, chocolate and cheese, excellent museums and spotless trains that run to the minute. It suits relaxed, city-and-lake itineraries as much as outdoor trips, and everything is easy to reach.
Highlights of Switzerland
- Zurich: Explore the old town, Lake Zurich promenade and excellent food, shopping and galleries in Switzerland's largest city.
- Lucerne: Cross the wooden Chapel Bridge and take a lake cruise beneath Mount Pilatus in this postcard-pretty old town.
- Geneva and Lake Geneva: Visit the lakeside, the famous Jet d'Eau and nearby Lausanne and Montreux, with vineyards rising behind the shore.
- Bern: Wander the medieval old town, a World Heritage site, with arcaded streets, fountains and a relaxed capital-city feel.
- Lugano and Ticino: Enjoy Italian-style piazzas, palm-lined promenades and a Mediterranean feel on the sunny southern side.
Best time to visit Switzerland
Spring and early autumn are lovely for city breaks, with mild weather and fewer crowds. Summer, from June to September, is ideal for lakes, boat trips and outdoor dining, and can be warm. Winter brings Christmas markets in December and a cosy atmosphere, though cities can be cold and grey outside the festive period.
Getting there from the UK
Direct flights from London to Zurich, Geneva or Basel take around one and a half to two hours. Zurich is the main hub, and Switzerland's rail network links the major cities quickly. Sky Travel can arrange flights from UK airports and tailor a city and lake itinerary.
Good to know
The currency is the Swiss franc, and Switzerland is not in the EU. German, French, Italian and Romansh are national languages, with English widely spoken. Plugs are Type J with three round pins, so bring an adaptor. Public transport is excellent. Check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for entry requirements.
