Why visit Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is a compact island with remarkable range. Ancient rock fortresses and sacred cities lie within reach of tea-covered hills, wild national parks and long golden beaches. Add warm, curious locals, fragrant curries and scenic train rides, and you have a destination that rewards both a busy touring holiday and a slower coastal escape.
Highlights of Sri Lanka
- Sigiriya Rock: Climb the ancient rock fortress, rising dramatically from the jungle, for sweeping views across the plains below.
- Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth: Visit this sacred Buddhist site beside a lake in the hill capital, best seen during the evening ceremonies.
- Ella and the hill country: Ride the famous scenic train through tea plantations and waterfalls, then hike to viewpoints around Ella.
- Yala National Park: Join a safari jeep at dawn for the chance of leopards, elephants, crocodiles and a rich variety of birdlife.
- Galle Fort: Walk the historic ramparts of this Dutch-era fort, with boutique shops, cafes and sea views at sunset.
Best time to visit Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so there is almost always a sunny coast. The south and west beaches are best from December to March, while the east coast suits April to September. The cultural triangle is good for most of the year, and the hill country is cooler and often misty. Wildlife viewing is rewarding in the drier months.
Getting there from the UK
Direct flights from London to Colombo take around 10 to 11 hours, arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport. One-stop options via the Gulf or India are also available. Sky Travel can arrange flights from UK airports and build an itinerary combining culture, wildlife and beach time.
Good to know
The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee. Sinhala and Tamil are the main languages, and English is widely understood. Sockets vary, with Type D, G and M in use, so bring a universal adaptor. Cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes and hats at temples. Check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for entry requirements.
