Why visit Tanzania
Tanzania offers some of Africa's most iconic experiences in a single country. Vast plains of the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater's wildlife-rich caldera and the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro are all here, along with Zanzibar's spice-scented streets and warm Indian Ocean beaches. It pairs a classic safari with a barefoot beach finish exceptionally well.
Highlights of Tanzania
- Serengeti National Park: Watch lions, cheetahs and vast herds on endless plains, ideally from a safari vehicle with an experienced local guide.
- Ngorongoro Crater: Descend into a volcanic caldera that shelters a dense concentration of wildlife, including a chance of black rhino.
- Tarangire National Park: See huge baobab trees and large elephant herds, particularly good in the dry months along the river.
- Zanzibar: Wander the old stone town of Stone Town, then relax on white beaches fringed with palm trees and coral reef.
- Mount Kilimanjaro: Admire Africa's highest mountain from afar, or take on a guided trek for a serious multi-day challenge.
Best time to visit Tanzania
The dry season from June to October is the classic time for safari, with clear skies and animals concentrated near water. Wildebeest herds move through the northern Serengeti around mid to late year, and calving takes place in the south from January to February. The long rains fall in March to May, when lodges are quieter.
Getting there from the UK
There are typically no direct flights from the UK, so expect a one-stop journey of around 10 to 14 hours, often via Nairobi, Addis Ababa or the Gulf. Main arrival airports are Kilimanjaro, for northern safaris, and Dar es Salaam, with Zanzibar by short onward flight. Sky Travel can arrange flights from UK airports.
Good to know
The currency is the Tanzanian shilling, though US dollars are widely accepted on safari. Swahili and English are the official languages. Sockets are typically Type D and G, so a UK adaptor is useful. Seek health advice early, including malaria precautions. Check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for entry requirements.
